This is the scannable version. Our Google AI Overviews guide explains the mechanics in full; this is the save-it checklist for when you just need to know what to actually go do.
Content strategies
- Lead with the answer. State the direct answer to your page's core question in the first paragraph, not buried after three paragraphs of introduction.
- Answer the question completely in one place. AI Overviews favor comprehensive single-source answers over content that requires clicking through multiple pages to piece together.
- Use specific numbers and facts, not vague claims. "3-6 months" is more citable than "it takes some time."
- Structure with clear headers. Break content into logically-headed sections that map to the sub-questions a reader (or an AI system) would naturally ask next.
- Keep content current. Update dates, prices, and facts when they change - AI systems favor sources that appear well-maintained.
Technical strategies
- Implement accurate schema markup. Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Product, or LocalBusiness schema - matched correctly to the content type - gives AI systems a clean, extractable version of your facts.
- Make sure your site is fully crawlable. Check for accidental noindex tags, blocked resources, or crawl errors on key pages; see our technical SEO basics guide for the full checklist.
- Keep page load speed healthy. Slow pages are less likely to be fully crawled and processed.
- Use descriptive, accurate headers and title tags. These help both traditional ranking and AI extraction understand what a page actually covers.
Authority and trust strategies
- Build genuine topical authority over time. A single great page competes less well than a site with a track record of covering a topic thoroughly and consistently.
- Earn real backlinks from relevant sources. Backlinks remain a trust signal AI systems draw on, since they largely inherit Google's existing index and ranking signals.
- Maintain consistent NAP and citation data if the content is local-business-related - see our NAP consistency guide.
- Attribute content to a real, credentialed author where relevant, especially for YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) topics like legal, medical, or financial content.
What doesn't work
Keyword stuffing, thin AI-generated content with no genuine expertise behind it, and chasing every trending AI-search buzzword instead of consistently applying the fundamentals above. AI Overviews reward the same underlying qualities that make content genuinely useful to a human reader - there's no separate shortcut.
